Adding a little more

After completing the layout so that it was operational and fully scenic, I wanted the ability to quickly change running stock. This called for an expansion of the two stub sidings at the rear of the layout.

The layout finished, pardon the belly in the foreground.

The answer was for two fiddle yards that could be detached so storage and mobility would not be compromised.

The two fiddle yards
Once fitted antoher problem presented itself. Even though they enhanced operation of the layout, thet detracted from the appearance. Two yards jutting out from the back edges left two gaping spaces at the front as can be seen in the following two pictures.

The scenic voids left by the addition of the fiddle yards (above and below)

The obvious solution was to build two scenic wedges that could be placed to fill the gap. I chose to build two triangular sections as the would minimize the scenic area that doesn't contain any rail traffic but just expands the scenic opportunity.

The right hand end continues the rice field area.

The left hand end continues the flowing river

The end result is a larger layout more suited to exhibiting and an added bonus of a larger scenic area. Win win situation.

Completed with fiddle yards and scenic wedges in place.

Until the next instalment.
Cheers
